Sacramento authorities are working a gun violence incident that unfolded on April 18 2026 at Howe Community Park in the Arden-Arcade area while authorities were dispersing an unlawful assembly of several hundred people.
Background
Sacramento County Sheriff's deputies initially responded to the park on Howe Avenue shortly before 6:30 PM after obtaining information of individuals who may have had concealed firearms. Soon after, additional information came in about a potential altercation unfolding at the location.
Aerial units flew over the park but could not confirm any ongoing fight. Despite this, it became clear that hundreds of people had assembled at the park without official sanction.
The Dispersal and Shooting
Officers began the process of clearing the park by encircling the gathering and broadcasting over loudspeakers instructing the hundreds present to disperse at once. About 15 minutes were provided for the crowd to leave.
While deputies worked to disperse the gathering that an estimated 20 to 25 shots echoed through the night. Gunfire sent the crowd running in all directions. Sacramento County Sheriff's deputies wasted no time in identifying shooting victims.
Four People Shot
Altogether, four individuals were found to have been shot. The victims — including a female and three males each reported to be in their 20s at the time of the incident — were brought to hospitals in the Sacramento area. Doctors and nurses confirmed that two victims were in serious condition, one victim's injuries were classified as moderate, and one had injuries classified as minor. As of last report, no fatalities were reported and all four were stable.
Sacramento Metro Fire provided support and assisted with medical triage those with gunshot wounds prior to hospital transport.
What Investigators Found
The primary shooting scene was believed to have been concentrated on the Cottage Way corridor alongside the Home Depot on the 2200 Howe Avenue block. Crime scene investigators located more spent casings on the Cottage Way roadway. Projectile impacts were noted in the iron fence alongside the nearby Home Depot. This evidence confirmed that at least one of the shooters had been aiming south from along Cottage Way targeting the Home Depot building and parking lot.
